Its not true that they die, but it is still NOT good for them to puff up. If they are scared enough to blow up, they are already greatly stressed. Staying puffed up for any long period of time REALLY stresses out the fish even further. It is from the stress that they can die from. All fish can die from being over stressed.

As most people may know there are many different types of puffer fish out there. But only selected kinds of the puffer fish relatives (unpoisonous) are allow to be sold in stores. By looking, you might say the fellow is cute, but it is no friend towards anyother fish. I bought a puffer fish not long ago and let me tell ya, that kute little guy is no joke! even though its the baby/smallest in my aquarium, but it nips all the fins out of my other fish like there wasn’t tommorow. Even when quarintine, it leaves holes on my net. Did I told you, there were teeths under that adorable face? As they get older I was suppose to move mine from freshwater to salt water(because of its species) and cut down its outgrowning teeths before it actually keep it from feeding itself. How would you guys like this adorable monster for a pet? If ya do, just make sure you don’t have anyother fish to feed to it..
P.S. Enjoy as much as you can because puffer fish are expansive!

Stress shortens the life of a puffer fish severely.
Puffers only puff when stressed, therefore they do not “die” from puffing but making them puff shortens their life.
I work as a divemaster and as soon as I see one starting to puff I pull away anyone around it, so it doesn´t get puffed.
They look cute but that´s no reason to shorten their lives…

Puffers puff up as a defense mechanism yes. And they do not die after doing so.
However, they are designed to puff with water, not air.
Upon ingesting air, like when some fool takes them out of the water, they are on occasion unable to expel all the air, leading to air pockets inside of their bodies.
This can then lead to several complications, including the need for the puffer to work harder to maintain its natural buoyancy, as well as the strong possibility of an infection occurring from the inside, as the air pocket would lead to the flesh to dry out. Puffing up is also very stressful for the fish.
In either of those cases, death is pretty much a given.
In short, such pictures are all nice and cute, but I do think that the fish, like all other animals, deserve better.

Some puffers are poisonous and some are not .. and they are eaten.. and they can live after puffin with air or water…you can burp them…when inflated with air to help aid their deflation and there are some puffers from all separate waters and some that move from freshwater on into brackish and then marine.. they eat other fish and snails ect.. they have teeth..

puffers wont immediacy die but it is very very likely to have a health complications. stress can cause many diseases in fish and it is very stressful to fill your innards with water while you think your life is in immediate danger
Unfortunately for THIS puffer if a puffer takes in air while inflating instead of water it will mess up his swim bladder and he will most likely die when put back in water. in other words this fish would have probably been fine IF they had not taken him form the water in order to take this picture.
This makes me sad. I feel like it’s terrified and the photographic moment is not worth it being held above water. “Cute” would be it swimming around feeling comfortable.

Actually, you’re all wrong. I have been raising puffers for nearly 8 years and once they puff up out of the water, theyre gone. There is no hope. Yes, puffing and unpuffing is their natural way of life, but only in the water. Once you expose a puffer to air, they will puff up with air and die. Puffing up with water is a totally different thing. These little guys weren’t meant to be exposed to air. Only water.

I caught on the size of a quarter tonight. He puffs up the size of a ping pong ball. I regularly scoop up sargassum seaweed to catch the fish swimming in it. Puffers puff up as a defense mechanism yes. And they do not die after doing so.
However, they are designed to puff with water, not air.
Upon ingesting air, like when some fool takes them out of the water, they are on occasion unable to expel all the air, leading to air pockets inside of their bodies.
This can then lead to several complications, including the need for the puffer to work harder to maintain its natural buoyancy, as well as the strong possibility of an infection occurring from the inside, as the air pocket would lead to the flesh to dry out. Puffing up is also very stressful for the fish.
In either of those cases, death is pretty much a given.
In short, such pictures are all nice and cute, but I do think that the fish, like all other animals, deserve better.

Some puffers are poisonous and some are not .. and they are eaten.. and they can live after puffin with air or water…you can burp them…when inflated with air to help aid their deflation and there are some puffers from all separate waters and some that move from freshwater on into brackish and then marine.. they eat other fish and snails ect.. they have teeth..

puffers wont immediacy die but it is very very likely to have a health complications. stress can cause many diseases in fish and it is very stressful to fill your innards with water while you think your life is in immediate danger
Unfortunately for THIS puffer if a puffer takes in air while inflating instead of water it will mess up his swim bladder and he will most likely die when put back in water. in other words this fish would have probably been fine IF they had not taken him form the water in order to take this picture.

Actually, you’re all wrong. I have been raising puffers for nearly 8 years and once they puff up out of the water, theyre gone. There is no hope. Yes, puffing and unpuffing is their natural way of life, but only in the water. Once you expose a puffer to air, they will puff up with air and die. Puffing up with water is a totally different thing. These little guys weren’t meant to be exposed to air. Only water.

I caught on the size of a quarter tonight. He puffs up the size of a ping pong ball. I regularly scoop up sargassum seaweed to catch the fish swimming in it. I’ve caught sargassum Frogfish, Triggers, filefish, seahorses, little fish that look like peas, cant remember the name and seargent majors. Anybody want to buy my baby puffer ?
